The aviation industry's offsetting scheme.
The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is a global market-based mechanism designed to stabilise net CO₂ emissions from international aviation.
Under CORSIA, airlines must offset eligible emissions growth above defined baselines using approved, high-quality carbon credits. The scheme complements the Paris Agreement by supporting international cooperation to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining strict environmental-integrity criteria for eligible credits.
What makes a credit CORSIA-eligible.
CORSIA eligibility requires projects to meet additional screening requirements beyond standard certification.
Phase and vintage
Phase 1 (2024–2026) accepts reductions from 1 Jan 2021 to 31 Dec 2026, from activities whose crediting period started on or after 1 Jan 2016. Airlines must cancel their Phase 1 units by January 2028. Phase 2 (2027–2035) follows. More on the vintage rule →

ICAO approves the crediting programme, not the individual project. Gold Standard was approved for Phase 1 in October 2024, with conditions and scope exclusions. Gold Standard has so far been approved for 2027–2029 within Phase 2. More on programme approval →

Corresponding adjustments must be made in the host country's Biennial Transparency Report, or insurance must be in place to guarantee this. The requirement is mandatory. More on corresponding adjustments →

Eligibility attaches to serial numbers, not to projects. Once the earlier steps are complete, a CORSIA label appears against the eligible units on the registry. More on serial-level eligibility →

Government engagement
Letter of Approbation in hand from the Government of Madagascar, formal host-country support for the project pipeline. Work continues toward full Article 6 authorisation for international transfer.
